Higashiyama and Kiyomizu — the charm of Kyo-machiya on the slopes

The Higashiyama and Kiyomizu area is known as one of the places in Kyoto where the look of the machiya survives most strongly. Low eaves line the stone-paved slopes, and the shadows cast by lattices and tiled roofs change character with every few steps. The streets around Sannenzaka leading up to Kiyomizu-dera are designated as a preservation district for groups of traditional buildings — a place where the townscape itself has been looked after and handed down. What draws people to machiya in Higashiyama is more than their appearance. On land where slopes and alleys interlock, houses stand close to the street and have long joined inside and out through lattices and eaves. The same lane shows a completely different face in the bustle of a daytime visit and in the quiet of morning or evening. If you are thinking about living in or staying in a machiya, walking the area at different times of day will give you a sense of how the place breathes. There are also the realities that come with a popular area. Slopes and narrow alleys are hard for cars to enter, which can make moving in or everyday shopping more of an effort, and the noise and crowds of sightseers are not to be ignored. The best way to judge these points is to walk the area yourself, comparing weekday with weekend and daytime with night. Choosing a machiya with the location's circumstances fully in view is the surest way to enjoy it comfortably for a long time.
